Founding of VietJet Air

2007

VietJet Air is a Vietnamese low-cost airline headquartered in Hanoi, with a major base at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport. It was set up by private investors, among them Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who became its chief executive, and it was the first private airline in Vietnam. It began flying domestic routes in December 2011 and soon added international services around Asia. It grew quickly on the basis of large orders for Airbus A320-family and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, using a single-class, no-frills model in which passengers pay extra for services such as meals and baggage. Phuong Thao became widely known as the country's first female self-made billionaire.
