Discovery of S/2007 S 2

18 January 2007

S/2007 S 2 is a small moon of Saturn, known by its provisional designation, which indicates that it was found in 2007. Like many of the planet's faintest satellites, it is only a few kilometres across and moves on a distant, tilted orbit. It was discovered by a team of astronomers led by Scott Sheppard that was searching for irregular satellites with large ground-based telescopes. Moons of this kind are thought to be captured objects or fragments of a larger body that broke up. The moon had not received a formal name when this entry was compiled.
