Construction of Sheikh Zayed Mosque

2007

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the largest mosques in the world and the main place of worship in the United Arab Emirates. It was built at the initiative of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the country, who is buried in its grounds, and was completed in 2007 after about a decade of construction. The white marble building has eighty-two domes, four tall minarets and a large courtyard decorated with floral inlays of semi-precious stones. Its interior contains large crystal chandeliers and one of the largest hand-knotted carpets ever made. The mosque can hold tens of thousands of worshippers, and it is open to visitors of all faiths.
