Publication of All Quiet on the Western Front

29 January 1929

All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel by the German writer Erich Maria Remarque, based on his experience as a soldier in the First World War. It follows Paul Baumer, a young man who enlists with his classmates after patriotic speeches by their teacher and who comes to see the war as brutal, senseless and cut off from the lives of those at home. The book was published first as a newspaper serial in Germany and then as a volume, and sold millions of copies in many languages. The Nazis later banned and burned it, and Remarque went into exile. The novel has been filmed several times, including an Academy Award-winning version in 1930.
