Establishment of Grand Teton National Park

26 February 1929

Grand Teton National Park is in northwestern Wyoming and is centered on the Teton Range, which rises abruptly from the valley of Jackson Hole, the highest peak, Grand Teton, reaching about 4,200 meters. The park was created in 1929 to protect the mountains and the lakes at their base. In 1950 it was enlarged by the addition of land in Jackson Hole that John D. Rockefeller Jr. had bought and donated, a move that caused controversy with local ranchers. The park includes Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake and the Snake River, with climbing, hiking and rafting, and its wildlife includes moose, elk, bison and bears. It lies just south of Yellowstone National Park and is linked to it by a parkway.
