Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was born on 27 October 1945 in Caetés. A Brazilian politician, Lula rose from a poor family in Pernambuco to become a metalworker and trade union leader, and he co-founded the Workers' Party in 1980. After several failed attempts he was elected president in 2002 and served two terms, from 2003 to 2010, during which social programmes such as Bolsa Família and a commodities boom reduced poverty, and he left office with high approval ratings. He was later convicted of corruption and money laundering and served about a year and a half in prison, but the convictions were annulled in 2021 on procedural grounds. In 2022 he defeated Jair Bolsonaro and returned to the presidency in 2023.
