The Iran crisis of 1946 was one of the first confrontations of the Cold War. Soviet troops, which had occupied northern Iran during the Second World War, did not leave at the agreed time in early 1946 and supported separatist governments in Iranian Azerbaijan and in the Kurdish Republic of Mahabad. Iran appealed to the new United Nations Security Council, and the United States, under President Harry Truman, backed the demand for withdrawal. The Soviet Union agreed to leave in return for an oil concession, which the Iranian parliament later rejected. The Iranian army then reoccupied the north, and the two breakaway governments collapsed in late 1946.
