Founding of Sweden men's national football team

12 July 1908

The Swedish men's national football team played its first international match in the summer of 1908 against Norway in Gothenburg, which Sweden won by a large margin. The team has been one of the stronger sides in Europe over the long term. It won the gold medal at the 1948 Olympic Games, hosted the 1958 World Cup and reached the final, where it lost to Brazil, and finished third at the 1950 and 1994 tournaments. Sweden has produced notable players over the years, from Gunnar Nordahl and the Gre-No-Li trio of AC Milan to Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the national team's record scorer. The team plays its home games in Solna, near Stockholm.
