Grover Cleveland died on 24 June 1908 in Princeton, aged 71. The only president in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms, Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. A Democrat from New York, he made his name as an honest reformer, first as mayor of Buffalo and then as governor. He won the 1884 election, lost the Electoral College in 1888 to Benjamin Harrison despite winning the popular vote, and regained the White House in 1892. His second term was dominated by the Panic of 1893 and the Pullman Strike, which he put down with federal troops. He opposed high tariffs and was known for vetoing many bills. In 1893 he underwent a secret operation for a tumour in his mouth.
