Salvador Allende was born on 26 June 1908 in Santiago. A Chilean physician and socialist politician, Allende was elected president in 1970 at the head of the Popular Unity coalition, the first Marxist to win the presidency of a Latin American country in a free election. His government nationalized the copper industry and banks and carried out land reform, but it faced inflation, shortages, strikes and opposition from the United States, which funded his opponents. On 11 September 1973 the armed forces under Augusto Pinochet staged a coup, and he died in the bombed presidential palace, an event that is generally held to have been suicide.
