Founding of Southampton F.C.

21 November 1885

Southampton Football Club was founded as St. Mary's Young Men's Association, a team connected with St Mary's Church on the south coast of England, and its nickname, the Saints, recalls these origins. The club played in the Southern League for many years before joining the Football League, and it won the FA Cup in 1976, beating Manchester United in the final as a Second Division side. It later played in the Premier League for a long period, earning a reputation as a producer of talented youngsters, such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Luke Shaw. The club left its old ground, The Dell, for St Mary's Stadium in 2001. It was relegated from the Premier League in 2023 and again in 2025.
