Ezra Pound was born on 30 October 1885 in Hailey. An American poet and critic, Pound was a founder of the Imagist movement and a major force in modernist poetry, helping to bring the work of T. S. Eliot, James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway to the public. His own works include Hugh Selwyn Mauberley and the long, unfinished epic The Cantos, which he worked on for decades. He lived in London, Paris and Italy, where he embraced Mussolini's Fascism and made radio broadcasts against the United States and the Allies. He was arrested for treason in 1945, and was declared unfit for trial and held for twelve years in a mental hospital in Washington. He returned to Italy after his release.
