Serbo-Bulgarian War

28 November 1885

The Serbo-Bulgarian War broke out soon after Bulgaria unexpectedly united with Eastern Rumelia in September 1885, in defiance of the Treaty of Berlin. Serbia's King Milan I, who feared that Bulgaria's gain would upset the balance in the Balkans and wanted compensation, declared war and invaded. Bulgaria's army was led by Prince Alexander of Battenberg, with many of its senior Russian officers withdrawn after a diplomatic quarrel with St Petersburg. The Bulgarians defeated the Serbs at Slivnitsa and counterattacked into Serbia, until Austria-Hungary intervened to save Milan's forces. The Treaty of Bucharest in 1886 restored the earlier borders, and Bulgarian unification was accepted by the great powers.
