François Mauriac was born on 11 October 1885 in Bordeaux. A French novelist, essayist and journalist, Mauriac was a prominent Catholic writer whose novels, set largely in the Bordeaux region, explore sin, guilt and grace within bourgeois families. His works include The Kiss to the Leper, Therese Desqueyroux, Vipers' Tangle and The Desert of Love. He was elected to the Academie francaise, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1952. During the German occupation he joined the literary resistance, and he later campaigned against torture in Algeria. He was a friend and supporter of General de Gaulle, and a noted columnist and critic in his later years.
