Founding of Goldman Sachs

1869

Goldman Sachs was founded in New York by Marcus Goldman, a German-Jewish immigrant who bought and sold commercial paper, the short-term promissory notes of merchants. His son-in-law Samuel Sachs joined later, and the firm took its current name in the 1880s. It grew into one of the leading investment banks, advising on mergers and underwriting stock and bond issues. Goldman Sachs went public in 1999 and became a bank holding company during the financial crisis of 2008, under which it gained access to government support. It has often drawn criticism for its power and influence, and many of its alumni have held senior government posts.
