Chaco War

from 9 September 1932 to 12 June 1935

The Chaco War was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over the Gran Chaco, a lowland region thought, wrongly, to contain large oil reserves. Bolivia, which had lost access to the sea in the War of the Pacific, hoped to reach the Paraguay River. Despite Bolivia's larger population and better equipment, Paraguay fought effectively on familiar ground and pushed the Bolivians back. Tens of thousands died on both sides, many from thirst and disease in the harsh terrain. A truce in 1935 and a peace treaty in 1938 awarded most of the disputed area to Paraguay, and the war led to political upheaval in both countries.
