Nazi Germany is the name given to Germany while it was ruled by Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers' Party, from his appointment as chancellor in January 1933 to the German defeat in 1945. Within months the regime had destroyed democracy and established a one-party dictatorship, persecuting political opponents, Jews and other groups. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 stripped Jews of citizenship, and during the war the regime carried out the Holocaust, the systematic murder of six million Jews, along with the killing of millions of others. Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 began the Second World War in Europe. Hitler died by suicide at the end of April 1945, and Germany surrendered in early May.
