Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah. An Indian economist and politician, Singh served as prime minister of India from 2004 to 2014 at the head of the Congress-led coalition. As finance minister in the early 1990s, under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, he launched sweeping liberalization of the economy that opened it to foreign investment and ended much of the old license system. Trained at Cambridge and Oxford, he had a career as an academic and civil servant, including as governor of the Reserve Bank of India. His premiership saw rapid growth and a nuclear deal with the United States, but also corruption scandals and a slowdown in its later years.
