Founding of S.L. Benfica

28 February 1904

Sport Lisboa e Benfica was founded in Lisbon as Sport Lisboa and merged a few years later with Grupo Sport Benfica, giving it the name by which it is known. It is the most successful Portuguese club, with a record number of national league titles, and plays at the Estádio da Luz, the Stadium of Light. It won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962 under the Hungarian coach Béla Guttmann, with the Mozambican-born striker Eusébio, known as the Black Panther, as its star. Since then it has lost several European finals. The eagle is its emblem, and a live eagle named Vitória flies over the pitch before home matches. Its rivalry with Porto and Sporting dominates Portuguese football.
