The Entente Cordiale was a set of agreements between the United Kingdom and France that settled a series of colonial disputes and ended a long period of rivalry between the two countries. France accepted British control of Egypt, while Britain recognised French influence in Morocco, and the two states also settled disputes about fishing rights around Newfoundland, borders in West Africa and spheres of influence in Siam and the New Hebrides. Although it was not a military alliance, the understanding drew the two countries closer in the face of the growing power of Germany, and it was expanded to include Russia in 1907, forming the Triple Entente. It underpinned their cooperation in the First World War.
