Russo-Japanese War

from 8 February 1904 to 5 September 1905

The Russo-Japanese War was fought between the Russian and Japanese empires over rival ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. It began with a Japanese surprise attack on the Russian fleet at Port Arthur in February 1904. Japan won a string of victories on land, including the long siege of Port Arthur and the battle of Mukden, and in May 1905 its navy destroyed the Russian Baltic Fleet, which had sailed halfway around the world, at the Battle of Tsushima. The war was ended by the Treaty of Portsmouth, negotiated through the mediation of US President Theodore Roosevelt. Japan's victory established it as a major power and was the first time in modern history that an Asian state defeated a European empire. In Russia the defeat contributed to the revolution of 1905.
