Founding of Real Betis Balompié

1907

Real Betis Balompie is a football club from Seville, in southern Spain, founded in the early twentieth century and named after Baetis, the Roman name for the Guadalquivir river. The present identity came from a merger of two local clubs, and the royal title was granted later by the monarchy. Betis has been the smaller rival of Sevilla FC in one of the country's most intense local derbies. The club won its only league title in 1935 and has won the Copa del Rey in 2005 and 2022. It plays in the Estadio Benito Villamarin, and its supporters are famous for their passion and loyalty, summed up in the club's motto of Viva el Betis manque pierda, meaning long live Betis even when it loses.
