Rise of scouting

1907

Scouting began with an experimental camp that Robert Baden-Powell, a British army officer who had become famous for the defence of Mafeking, held on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, England. He took about twenty boys from different social backgrounds and taught them camping, observation and woodcraft, drawing on his military experience. His handbook Scouting for Boys appeared the following year and led to the spontaneous formation of troops across Britain. The movement spread rapidly around the world, a parallel Girl Guides movement followed in 1910, and Scouting and Guiding now involve tens of millions of young people in almost every country.
