Dmitri Mendeleev died on 20 January 1907 in Saint Petersburg, aged 72. A Russian chemist, Mendeleev was born in Siberia, studied in Saint Petersburg and became a professor there. In 1869, while writing a chemistry textbook, he arranged the known chemical elements by atomic weight and found that their properties repeated at regular intervals, which he presented as the periodic table. He left gaps for elements that had not yet been discovered and predicted their properties, and the later discovery of gallium, scandium and germanium confirmed his predictions. He also studied gases, solutions and the Russian petroleum industry, and worked on standards of weights and measures. Element 101, mendelevium, is named after him.
