Founding of Museum of Philistine Culture

1990

The Museum of Philistine Culture is a small archaeological museum in Israel, in the Ashdod area, devoted to the Philistines, one of the peoples who lived on the southern coast of the Levant in the early Iron Age. It displays artefacts from excavations at Philistine sites such as Ashdod, including pottery, figurines and objects of daily life, that help show how these coastal communities lived and worshipped. The Philistines, known from the Bible as rivals of the early Israelites, are thought to have come to the region from the Aegean world around 1200 BCE. The museum was founded in the early 1990s to present the results of this archaeological research to the public.
