Publication of Doraemon

1 December 1969

Doraemon is a Japanese manga series by the artist known as Fujiko F. Fujio, the pen name of Hiroshi Fujimoto, and it first appeared in children's magazines at the end of 1969. It tells of a robotic cat from the twenty-second century who travels back in time to help a lazy schoolboy, Nobita Nobi, using gadgets taken from his four-dimensional pocket. The stories mix humour, school life and science fiction. The television anime versions began in the 1970s, and a long-running series from 1979 made the blue cat a household name across Asia. Doraemon was named a cultural ambassador by Japan's government, and its films are released every year.
