Creation of Haskell

1990

Haskell is a purely functional programming language, named after the American logician Haskell Curry. It was designed by a committee of academics who wanted a common open standard for research in functional programming, after a meeting in 1987, and the first version of the language report appeared in 1990. Its main features include lazy evaluation, a strong static type system and type classes, as well as monads, which are used to manage side effects such as input and output. The Glasgow Haskell Compiler is its most widely used implementation. Although it has been mostly used in universities and research, it has influenced many other languages and is used in finance, compilers and other industries.
