Azerbaijan March is the national anthem of Azerbaijan. Its music was composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov and the words were written by the poet Ahmad Javad, and it was first used as the anthem of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the short-lived independent state established in 1918 and ended by the Soviet takeover in 1920. During the Soviet period it was suppressed, and it was restored as the national anthem in 1992, soon after Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991, which is the date shown here. Hajibeyov was also the author of the first opera in the Muslim world, Leyli and Majnun. The anthem expresses love of the homeland and the readiness to defend it.
