First flight of Sukhoi Su-30

31 December 1989

The Sukhoi Su-30 is a Russian twin-engine, two-seat multirole fighter developed by the Sukhoi design bureau from the Su-27UB trainer, initially as a long-range interceptor. The prototype of this version made its first flight at the very end of 1989. It was later developed into a series of export versions, the Su-30MK family, that became commercially very successful. India builds the Su-30MKI under license, and other users include China, Malaysia, Algeria, Vietnam and Venezuela. Many versions carry thrust-vectoring engines and canard foreplanes that give them exceptional maneuverability, and several hundred have been built.
