Release of DuckDuckGo

25 September 2008

DuckDuckGo is an internet search engine that promotes privacy, founded by the American entrepreneur Gabriel Weinberg. It does not track users' searches or build personalized profiles of them, in contrast to the practices of the largest search companies. It draws on results from a range of sources, including its own crawler and partner search services, and it earns money from ads linked to the search term and not to the user. Features include so-called bang shortcuts that send a query directly to another site. Interest in the service rose strongly after the revelations about government surveillance in 2013, and the company later added a privacy-focused browser, an email forwarding service and other tools.
