Founding of Danmarks Nationalbank

1 August 1818

Danmarks Nationalbank is the central bank of Denmark, founded in Copenhagen after the Napoleonic Wars had left the Danish state bankrupt and its currency in disarray. The bank was set up to restore trust in the currency and to stabilise the monetary system, and it received the exclusive right to issue banknotes. It has been involved in maintaining the fixed exchange rate policy of the krone, which has been tied to the euro, although Denmark is not a member of the eurozone. Its headquarters in Copenhagen, designed by the architect Arne Jacobsen, is considered a landmark of modernist architecture. The bank is also part of the European System of Central Banks.
