Ivan Turgenev was born on 28 October 1818 in Oryol. A Russian novelist, short-story writer and playwright, Turgenev was one of the great figures of nineteenth-century literature. His collection A Sportsman's Sketches portrayed the lives of serfs with sympathy and contributed to debates that led to the emancipation of 1861, and his novels, including Fathers and Sons, Rudin and On the Eve, explored the generational conflict and the Russian intelligentsia. The term nihilist was popularized by Fathers and Sons. He spent much of his later life in Western Europe, near the singer Pauline Viardot, and became a friend of Flaubert and Henry James.
