Alexander II of Russia was born on 17 April 1818 in Small Nicholas Palace. The twelfth emperor of Russia, Alexander II came to the throne in 1855 during the Crimean War, and ended it with the Treaty of Paris. He is remembered as the Tsar Liberator for the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, the most important reform in modern Russian history. He also reformed the judiciary, local government, the army and education, and expanded the empire in Central Asia and the Far East, while selling Alaska to the United States in 1867. His reforms were limited, and the 1863 Polish uprising and revolutionary groups led to harsher policies. After several attempts, he was killed in Saint Petersburg by a bomb thrown by members of the People's Will.
