Gran Colombia

from 1819 to 1831

Gran Colombia was a republic created by Simon Bolivar in the northern part of South America, after the independence struggle against Spain. It was formed at the Congress of Angostura, and comprised the territories of present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama, and parts of Peru, Guyana and Brazil. Bolivar dreamed of a union of South American states, but regional rivalries, disagreements over centralism and federalism, and personal conflicts among leaders such as Francisco de Paula Santander and Jose Antonio Paez weakened it. Venezuela and Ecuador broke away in 1830, and the remaining part became the Republic of New Granada, the predecessor of Colombia.
