Adidas was founded by Adolf Dassler, known as Adi, who started making sports shoes in the family's laundry room in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, and in 1924 formed a company with his brother Rudolf as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. The shoes became popular among athletes, and Jesse Owens wore them at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. After a bitter quarrel, the brothers separated in 1948. Rudolf founded Puma, and Adi registered Adidas, a name drawn from his own, with the three stripes as a trademark. The company grew into one of the world's largest sportswear brands, known for its football boots, track shoes and clothing.
