Origins of National Football League

1920

The National Football League traces its roots to a meeting in Canton, Ohio, where representatives of several professional teams formed the American Professional Football Association. The founders wanted to curb the bidding wars over players and bring some stability to a sport that was financially fragile and loosely organised. The association took the name National Football League two seasons later. Over the following decades the league outlasted many rivals, agreed to merge with the American Football League in the 1960s, and grew into the richest sports league in the United States, with the Super Bowl as its yearly championship game.
