Otzi the Iceman is found

19 September 1991

On 19 September 1991 two German hikers, Helmut and Erika Simon, found a corpse emerging from melting ice in the Otztal Alps near the Italian-Austrian border. It proved to be a man who had died around 3300 BC, the oldest naturally preserved human mummy ever found in Europe. Otzi was about 45 years old, wore a grass cape and leather clothes, and carried a copper axe, a bow and a flint knife. An arrowhead lodged in his shoulder shows that he was murdered. His stomach contents, tattoos and DNA give an unmatched view of Copper Age life.
