Founding of Ho Chi Minh City

1976

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam, and was formerly known as Saigon. It grew from a small Khmer settlement into a trading port and was taken over by the Vietnamese in the seventeenth century. Under French colonial rule it became the capital of Cochinchina, and later the capital of South Vietnam. After North Vietnamese forces captured the city at the end of the Vietnam War, it was merged with the surrounding province of Gia Dinh and renamed in honour of the revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh when the country was reunified. It is Vietnam's main commercial and financial centre, and many people still call it Saigon.
