Netherlands Antilles

from 15 December 1954 to 10 October 2010

The Netherlands Antilles was a Caribbean country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, formed in 1954 when the Charter for the Kingdom gave the Dutch overseas territories internal self-government. It consisted of islands in two groups: Curacao and Bonaire off the coast of Venezuela, and Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba in the Leeward Islands. Aruba was part of it until it received separate status within the Kingdom in 1986. Willemstad on Curacao was the capital. In the 2000s the islands voted on their future, and the country was dissolved in October 2010. Curacao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became special municipalities of the Netherlands.
