Republic of Artsakh

from 2 September 1991 to 1 January 2023

The Republic of Artsakh was a self-declared state in the South Caucasus, in the region known as Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. It declared independence on 2 September 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, in a region with a majority ethnic Armenian population that had been an autonomous region of Soviet Azerbaijan. A war followed from 1992 to 1994, in which Armenian forces gained control of the region and the surrounding districts. No country, including Armenia, formally recognized it. In 2020 a second war led to Azerbaijan retaking much of the territory, and in September 2023 a rapid offensive ended the republic's existence, causing nearly all of the Armenian population to leave. Its dissolution was announced for the start of 2024.
