First edition of Sanremo Music Festival

1951

The Sanremo Music Festival is an annual Italian song contest held in the Ligurian town of Sanremo, and it is the oldest and most important event of its kind in Italy. The first edition took place in 1951 at the casino and was broadcast on radio, with only a few singers taking part. It has launched many careers and given Italy some of its best-known songs, such as Nel blu dipinto di blu, better known as Volare, in 1958. Its format was the model for the Eurovision Song Contest, which began in 1956. The festival is a major television event, watched by large audiences, and it is often accompanied by public debate.
