The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institution of Germany, founded in 1951 to teach the German language abroad and to promote cultural exchange. It was named after the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and took over the work of an earlier body, the German Academy. The institute is based in Munich and operates a worldwide network of branches that offer language courses, exams, libraries, film screenings, exhibitions and concerts. It is financed largely by the German government but is independent in its programs. Its work was intended to show a democratic and open Germany after the Second World War.
