The Golden Bear is the top prize for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival, known as the Berlinale, one of the major European film festivals alongside Cannes and Venice. The statuette takes the form of the bear that is the symbol of Berlin. The festival began in West Berlin in 1951, partly as a showcase of Western film during the Cold War, and has been held every year since, usually in February. The prize has gone to films from around the world, among them Asghar Farhadi's A Separation and Gianfranco Rosi's Fire at Sea, and its jury chooses among the competition entries.
