Gordon Brown was born on 20 February 1951 in Giffnock. A Scottish Labour politician, Brown served as Chancellor of the Exchequer for ten years under Tony Blair, the longest continuous tenure in the modern era, before becoming Prime Minister in 2007. He gave the Bank of England operational independence over interest rates and was a prominent figure in the response to the 2008 financial crisis, urging coordinated international action to stabilize banks. He lost office after the 2010 general election. In later years he remained active as a campaigner on global education and poverty, and as a voice in debates over Scottish independence.
