Establishment of Kakadu National Park

5 April 1979

Kakadu National Park is a large protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, east of Darwin. It was declared in stages from 1979 and is jointly managed by its Aboriginal traditional owners and the national parks authority. The park includes floodplains, wetlands, rivers and sandstone escarpments, and it is home to saltwater crocodiles, many birds and rare plants. Its rock shelters hold some of the most important Aboriginal rock art in the world, spanning thousands of years. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for both its natural and its cultural value. The mining of uranium nearby has long been controversial.
