The Council of the Baltic Sea States is an intergovernmental organization for political cooperation among countries around the Baltic Sea, set up at a conference in Copenhagen soon after the end of the Cold War. It was created to promote contact and cooperation in a region that had been divided by the Iron Curtain, bringing together the Nordic states, Germany, Poland, the three Baltic republics, Russia, and the European Commission. Its work has covered areas such as democratic institutions, economic development, the environment, civil security and the fight against human trafficking. Russia's participation was suspended in 2022 after its invasion of Ukraine, and the council continues to work with the remaining members.
