Establishment of Iguazú National Park

9 October 1934

Iguazu National Park protects the Argentine side of the Iguazu Falls, one of the greatest waterfall systems in the world, on the border with Brazil, in the province of Misiones. The falls consist of hundreds of separate cascades spread over almost three kilometres, with the Devil's Throat the most spectacular, a U-shaped chasm where much of the river plunges. The park is covered with subtropical rainforest, which is home to jaguars, tapirs, coatis, toucans and thousands of butterflies. It forms a joint World Heritage Site with the Brazilian Iguacu National Park, and walkways allow visitors to get close to the water. It is among the most visited natural sites in South America.
