Brigitte Bardot was born on 28 September 1934 in 15th arrondissement of Paris. A French actress and singer, Bardot became an international celebrity after starring in And God Created Woman (1956), directed by Roger Vadim, and was known by her initials, BB. She appeared in dozens of films, including Contempt by Jean-Luc Godard, and she recorded popular songs in the 1960s. She retired from acting in 1973 at the height of her fame and devoted herself to animal welfare, founding a foundation in her name in 1986. In later life she drew criticism and several fines from French courts for remarks about immigration and Islam that were judged to incite racial hatred. She remains a defining symbol of French cinema in the 1950s and 1960s.
