Long March

from 16 October 1934 to 19 October 1935

The Long March was the retreat of the Chinese Communist Red Army from its bases in southeastern China to the northwest, to escape encirclement by the Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek. Starting from the Jiangxi area, the marchers covered thousands of kilometers across rivers, mountains and swampland, often under attack. A meeting at Zunyi in early 1935 is seen as the point at which Mao Zedong gained leadership of the party. Only a small fraction of those who set out survived to reach northern Shaanxi, where the Communists set up a base around Yan'an. The march became a founding legend of the Chinese Communist movement and helped it win support.
