Thingvellir National Park is a protected area in southwestern Iceland of great historical and geological importance. It is the site where the Althing, one of the world's oldest parliaments, first met in about 930, and where Icelanders gathered to make laws and settle disputes for centuries. The park lies in a rift valley formed by the movement apart of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which can be seen in its cliffs and fissures, and it borders the largest natural lake in Iceland, Thingvallavatn. It became Iceland's first national park in 1928 as a place sacred to the nation, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
